Residential Roof: The Project
The Icynene Spray Foam Insulation system is the most suitable form of insulation for your roof, attic or loft space in both new and existing build homes.
This Hood River home owner was looking to reduce their energy bills. The easy solution was to apply a 5 and a half inch layer of closed cell spray foam insulation to the exterior of the roof.
How It Was Done
This approach meant there was minimal disruption to the interior of the house. The client is left with an unaffected roof, and a highly energy efficient house.
Heat can easily be lost through rafters, walls, and floors of the attic if not properly insulated. Spray foam insulation minimizes this heat loss, resulting in a home that is air tight; warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
A quarter of heat in the home is lost through the roof. That is a huge amount, especially when it comes chilly Oregon winters. We pour endless dollars into keeping our homes cosy and warm, just to lose 25%?

Common Questions About This Type of Project
Why insulate at the roof deck instead of the ceiling?
It brings the attic inside the conditioned envelope, which matters when ductwork runs through that attic. It also stops the roof deck itself becoming the cold surface that condensation forms on.
Does this mean the attic is no longer vented?
That is the point of an unvented assembly, and it is why continuity matters so much. A half-sealed unvented attic performs worse than a properly vented one.
What thickness was specified here?
A minimum of 3 inches of closed-cell, which is what we specify on Pacific Northwest roof decks so the dew point sits inside the foam rather than on the sheathing.
